Most of the "2026 grad programs" floating around your DMs have already started or already closed. The Feb 2026 cohorts began in February. The Atlassian 2026 grad intake closed in May 2025. Telstra's 2027 program just closed too. The 485 visa runway is finite, and applying to a program that is not actually open is the most expensive form of wasted time on a shrinking clock.

What is actually open right now in May 2026 is two things. The Dec 2026 internships starting in roughly six months, and the 2027 graduate programs starting in Feb 2027. Both of those windows are real, both have verified 485-friendly pathways, and both reward applications lodged this month over applications lodged in June. This post covers the 6 programs that are genuinely open, why a May application beats a June one, and exactly what to do with the list this week.

I spent a day scraping the live careers pages and verifying every claim against the actual page wording. Six programs cleared the bar. The rest either require AU/NZ citizenship or PR (the entire major-bank list, Optus, Woolworths, Accenture, Qantas), or are closed waiting for the next cycle. The 6 below are the list to act on this week.

    Why this matters

The 485 visa runway is finite, and every week spent on a program that is already closed is a week off a shrinking clock. Most "open" grad program lists are wrong. They include intakes that started months ago, or roles that quietly require citizenship or PR a 485 holder cannot hold. Getting the live list right, and lodging in May rather than June, is the difference between a real shot and a wasted one.

    Who this is for

    This is for you if:

    • You are on a 485 visa hunting for grad programs or internships you can actually apply to.
    • You are a current Bachelors or Masters student in Australia targeting a 2027 graduate start.
    • You keep finding "grad program" lists that turn out to be closed or PR-only.
    • You want to time your application to the window that actually rewards it.

Why May matters more than the listings let on

The standard line is "applications close in June or July". The real line is "applications are assessed week by week and the strongest slots go in the first 2 to 4 weeks of the window".

Rolling assessment is the part nobody tells you. It is not a deadline-based pile that gets sorted at the end. The first applications get the first interview slots. The first interview slots get the most attention. The strongest seats go to week-1 applicants. By the time someone lodges in June, the assessors are already past their best mental model of "who is strong this round".

May is the strong window. Lodging in May into the 2027 cohort is functionally a different application than lodging the same resume in late June.

The 6 programs to apply to this week

Each one below has an intake page that was open as of mid-May 2026. Re-check the live careers page before you lodge. Visa policies and intake windows shift without notice.

    1. Atlassian: 2026/2027 ANZ Internship (Nov 2026 to Feb 2027)

๐ŸŽฏ Best for: Current Bachelors and Masters students graduating by Jan 2028. โšก Window: Open. Recruiting window closes by June 2026. โœ… Visa: Full work rights required. Atlassian is one of the few early-career employers in AU that actively sponsors visas where needed.

A 12-week paid internship in Sydney. Atlassian historically rewards portfolio depth over GPA. If you have one or two production-grade projects with public code, the application is worth lodging this week. The bar is high but the conversion rate from intern to grad role is the highest in the Sydney tech market.

Note: the 2026 Software Engineer Graduate intake (already started in Feb 2026) closed in May 2025. The 2027 Graduate intake will open later in 2026. The internship is the open door right now. Source: atlassian.com/company/careers/earlycareers.

    2. Canva: Internship Program (Dec 2026 start)

๐ŸŽฏ Best for: Design, product and tech students based in Australia, able to commit Dec 2026 to Feb 2027. โšก Window: Open for the 2026/2027 cohort. Multiple streams. โœ… Visa: Available to "Australia International Student/Graduate Visa holders" provided you are currently based in Australia. Canva does not sponsor visas. 485 holders qualify because they already have independent work rights.

Canva's early-careers page explicitly names 485 holders as eligible alongside citizens and PRs, provided you are physically in Australia. That is the cleanest 485 inclusion of any program on this list. The trade is that Canva does not sponsor or relocate. If you are offshore right now, this is not your door. If you are in AU on a 485 or Student visa, it absolutely is. Source: lifeatcanva.com/en/early-careers.

    3. Deloitte: 2027 Graduate Program (International Students stream)

๐ŸŽฏ Best for: Consulting, audit, tax, technology consulting and risk advisory applicants. โšก Window: Main application window was 25 Feb to 7 Apr 2026. Rolling EOI may still be accepted. Check the page before assuming closed. โœ… Visa: Dedicated International Students pathway. You must reside lawfully in Australia and meet English language requirements. Deloitte does NOT sponsor the 485. You secure it independently.

Deloitte runs the only Big 4 grad program in Australia with a published International Students stream. The wording on their careers page is direct: you are responsible for independently applying for and securing your 485. The seats are real but the visa work is on you. If the formal April window has closed by the time you read this, lodge an EOI anyway. Deloitte historically accepts strong candidates through their rolling pipeline. 4. EY: 2027 Graduate Program (International Student EOI)

๐ŸŽฏ Best for: Audit, technology consulting and select advisory streams (NOT general Consulting, NOT Canberra). โšก Window: Open with rolling review. โœ… Visa: Limited eligibility. You need a current valid AU work visa, AND a credible path to PR or a transition visa before your current visa expires. EY will not sponsor PR.

EY's international-student EOI is more restrictive than Deloitte's. They will not sponsor and they want to see your PR pathway is realistic before they offer. If your 485 has 18+ months and your skills assessment is in motion, this passes. If you are on a 485 with 9 months left and no nominated occupation, it does not. Core Consulting and Canberra roles are excluded for international applicants. Stick to Audit and Tech. Source: EY International Student EOI.

    5. KPMG: Graduate and Vacationer (rolling intake)

๐ŸŽฏ Best for: Tech, cyber, data, audit and advisory streams. โšก Window: Open. Rolling intake. Apply when you are ready. โœ… Visa: "You don't need to be an Australian resident, but you must have full-time working rights within Australia at the time of your application and for the program dates."

KPMG runs the most application-friendly Big 4 timing in 2026. The rolling intake means there is no hard May or June deadline pushing you. The eligibility wording is the clearest of any major employer: you need full work rights, you do not need PR. A 485 with reasonable runway satisfies the bar. Note that KPMG, like the rest of the Big 4 in 2026, does not formally sponsor; the work-rights piece is on you. Source: kpmg.com/au graduates.

    6. Mastercard: Launch 2027, Software Engineer I (Sydney)

๐ŸŽฏ Best for: Software engineering grads targeting fintech / payments. โšก Window: Open, actively recruiting. Feb 2027 start. โœ… Visa: Open to candidates with "full legal working rights in Australia". Mastercard Australia does NOT sponsor intern or full-time employment visas.

The dark-horse pick on this list. Mastercard's Launch program is one of the better-paid early-career tech roles in Sydney and the application volume is lower than Atlassian or Canva because most students do not know it exists. If you have payments, fintech, distributed systems or backend interests, this is worth a serious application. 485 holders qualify because the work-rights piece is satisfied by your existing visa. What is NOT on this list and why

Three categories of programs got cut.

    Closed for this cycle

    • Atlassian 2026 Software Engineer Graduate (intake closed May 2025, cohort already started)
    • Telstra Graduate Program 2027 (closed, applications for 2028 open early 2027)
    • PwC Graduate Program FY27 (closed)
    • CommBank Engineering & Cyber Grad Feb 2026 (cohort started)

    PR or AU citizenship required

    • Macquarie Group Graduate and Internship Programs
    • Commonwealth Bank Graduate Program (FY27 not yet open)
    • NAB, ANZ Bank
    • Optus
    • Accenture ANZ
    • Qantas
    • Woolworths

This is the part of the list nobody else gets right. Every "top 10 grad programs for international students" article I have seen lists Macquarie or CBA or Optus without checking that those programs explicitly require AU/NZ citizenship or PR. They do. A 485 holder cannot apply, and applying anyway wastes the slot.

    The PwC question

PwC was a maybe. They do accept candidates with full work rights, which a 485 satisfies. They do not sponsor. Their FY27 graduate program is currently closed waiting for the next cycle, so they are not on the live list. When PwC reopens, treat them like KPMG: open to 485 holders, sponsorship is on you.

    The grad-program plus 485 problem

The harder reality on this list is that 5 of the 6 programs do not sponsor. Atlassian is the only one that actively sponsors early-career tech roles in 2026. The other 5 will hire you, pay you, train you, and assume you will figure out your own visa runway.

That means your 485 needs to outlast the grad program by enough months to convert into a 482 sponsorship or 189/190 PR pathway internally. If your 485 expires 14 months from now and the grad program starts in 9, you finish 5 months of program with your visa already lapsed. That is the math nobody runs at application time.

Want your grad-program shortlist mapped against your 485 runway?

I came through this market myself and have helped 30+ international graduates get hired. In a 1-on-1 Get Hired call we map your shortlist against your visa runway and resume strength, and you leave with a 3-program shortlist, 3 resume openings drafted, and a sponsorship-conversion timeline keyed to your 485 expiry.

What you can do about it

    Three steps. No more.

    Step 1. Pick 3 programs. Not 6.

The 6 above split into 1 tech scale-up (Atlassian), 1 design/product scale-up (Canva), 3 Big 4 (Deloitte, EY, KPMG), 1 fintech enterprise (Mastercard). Pick one from each cluster you can credibly target. Three applications, three different resume versions. The pile of "apply to all 6 with the same resume" is the pile that gets rejected at screening.

Step 2. Rewrite the resume for each program

A resume that works for Atlassian does not work for Deloitte. Atlassian wants production projects and code. Deloitte wants academic depth and client-readiness. Mastercard wants distributed-systems thinking with a payments lens. Same person, three different resume openings, three different bullet-point hierarchies.

The cheapest version of this is one master resume and three 30-minute rewrites. The expensive version is one generic resume submitted six times.

Step 3. Lodge within 7 days

โœ… Rolling assessment rewards week-1 applicants.

The 7-day window is not optional. Strong seats go to candidates the assessors see when they are fresh. After week 4, the pile gets cleared faster and the threshold for "strong enough to interview" creeps up.

If you have not started the application by week 2, you are competing for the back half of the seats with the front-half resumes. That is a worse trade than waiting for the next cycle with a better resume.

Grad-program eligibility, sponsorship policies and intake windows shift without notice. The sources above are live as of mid-May 2026. Re-verify each company's careers page before lodging.
