Australian Summer Internships 2026/27: Dates and Who Can Apply

Nine Australian summer internship programs close during August 2026. The earliest shuts on 9 August. The placements they lead to do not start until late November, and some not until January 2027, which is why almost nobody realises the window is open right now.

This post lists all nine with their closing dates, length and pay where the employer publishes it. It also covers the part that decides everything and that most listings bury: two separate gates control whether you can apply at all, and only one of them is your visa.

Why this matters

A vacation program is not a normal job. It is a recruiting funnel. The firm takes you for four to twelve weeks over the summer break, then offers the strong performers a graduate role for the year after. That is why the timing runs so far ahead of the work.

It also means the eligibility rules are strange. These programs are built around the university calendar, so most of them want you still studying, usually with about a year of degree left.

For most students graduating in 2027, the 2026/27 summer is the last vacation-program window before you finish. There are exceptions, and I have named them below, but treat this as a one-shot deadline rather than something that comes round again.

Who this is for

This is for you if:

• You are in the second-last year of an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Australia, graduating in 2027.
• You are an international student and you want to know which programs will accept your visa before you spend a weekend on applications.
• You are on a 485 visa and you have been applying to internships without hearing back.
• You are advising a student who keeps getting screened out and cannot work out why.

The two gates nobody explains

Most people check one thing: do I have work rights. That is the wrong question, and it is why applications disappear.

Gate one is your document, not your work rights. Australian employers and governments split into three groups, and the difference is stark.

The Australian Government Graduate Program requires you to "be an Australian citizen (or become an Australian citizen by December 2026)". Permanent residency is not enough.

The Victorian Government graduate program accepts citizens and permanent residents but states you must "not be on a temporary graduate visa", naming the 485 and excluding it. The NSW Government program does the opposite, accepting "a citizen of another country with a current visa that allows continuous full-time work in Australia until at least 4 August 2028".

That NSW line is a date test, not a visa test. A two-year 485 granted in mid-2026 would expire in mid-2028 and miss it by weeks. The visa class can pass while the expiry date fails, which is the trap worth knowing about.

The same split runs through the private sector. The EY Vacationer Program requires you to "hold Australian or New Zealand citizenship or be an Australian permanent resident".

The KPMG Vacationer Program lists Australian Student Visa and Skilled Migration Visa (485) among its accepted work rights. Same tier of firm, same kind of program, opposite answers.

Gate two is your year of study. EY and Suncorp both require the penultimate year specifically. Arup prefers it. BDO takes penultimate or final year. CSIRO wants you currently enrolled with at least a year of study behind you.

This is the gate that catches most 485 holders, because a 485 means you have finished studying. It is not universal though. NAB accepts anyone who completed a qualification within a year of the program start, so a recent graduate is not automatically locked out of everything.

The nine programs, in deadline order

⚡ NAB StarCamp. Closes 9 August. Technology engineering, Melbourne, 10 weeks full-time from 23 November. $60,000 to $70,000 for the 10-week program. Penultimate year, or completed a qualification within the past year. Australian citizens and permanent residents only.

📊 CSIRO Vacation Studentships. Closes 10 August, 11pm AEST. Science and technology research, 8 to 12 weeks between November and February, $2,056.32 per fortnight. Open to citizens, permanent residents "and international students who have full work rights for the duration of the placement".

🎯 BDO Vacation Program, Cyber. Closes 16 August. Canberra, 4 weeks full-time from January 2027. Penultimate or final year. Its work rights field lists student visas and the 485, which sits oddly with the study requirement, so ask before you count on it.

📋 Arup Summer Vacation Programme. Closes 16 August. Fire safety engineering, Perth, 12 weeks from November. Open to students "currently studying a relevant degree, preferably in their penultimate year". Work rights field lists student visas but not the 485.

✅ Suncorp Technology Internship. Closes 17 August. 12 weeks casual, 24 November to 12 February, $37.92 per hour plus casual loading and superannuation. Penultimate year, graduating 2027. Needs full working rights, no sponsorship offered.

❌ EY Vacationer Program, Technology. Closes 18 August. Five cities, starts December. Penultimate year. Australian or New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents only.

❌ Defence Industry Internship Program. Closes 28 August on the listing header, though the ad body says 30 August. Treat 28 August as the deadline. Engineering and technology. Australian citizens only.

🎯 Citadel Securities Software Engineering Internship. Closes 28 August. Sydney. Work rights field includes student visas and the 485.

🎯 TikTok Intern, 2027 start. Closes 30 August. Sydney, backend, frontend, SDET and SRE roles. Accepts international applicants.

One worth knowing about outside August: the KPMG Vacationer Program in Technology and Digital closes 4 October, pays a $60,000 to $80,000 band, and sits among the most permissive on visas alongside BDO and TikTok. If you are international and short on time, that is the one with the most room left.

These are the nine I checked directly. They are not the whole market, and other employers run cycles that open and close on their own schedule.

What you can do about it

Step 1. Check your study year first. If you are graduating in 2027 you clear the study-year gate on most of these. That gate is separate from the visa one, so clearing it does not mean every program above is open to you. Read both lines on every listing.

Step 2. Read the work rights field, not the job description. On SEEK Grad every listing carries an "Accepts International" flag and a full work rights list showing which visas are accepted. You have to expand the field to see all of it, because it truncates after the first two entries. That is the only question that matters and it takes four seconds.

Step 3. If you hold a temporary visa, compare its expiry against the program's end date. NSW wants continuous full-time work rights to 4 August 2028, and other employers apply similar logic without spelling it out. It is worth pulling up your own grant letter and checking rather than relying on this article.

Step 4. Check your work-hour conditions before you accept. Student visas carry limits on how much you can work while your course is in session, with more room during scheduled breaks. Some of these placements run to mid-February and can brush against the start of semester, so confirm your own conditions against the program dates.

Step 5. Apply a day early. Several listings publish closing times in a non-AEST offset, and at least one of the nine gives two different closing times in the same ad.
