How to Hit 100 Points for Australian PR (Subclass 189) in 2026

I'm on a 485 Graduate visa right now. Every 485 holder I know is doing the same mental math. Is 65 enough? Is 75 a waste? How do the people getting invites actually get to 100?

The 189 Skilled Independent Visa needs 65 points to even submit. It needs 85 to 100 to actually get invited. I ran my own stack last month and realised I already had 80 without trying. The gap between "I'm stuck at 65" and "I'm stuck at 95" is almost never about qualifications. It's about knowing the 9 places points come from. This post breaks down all 9 point sources with real numbers, the hidden add-ons most people miss, and my own stack so you can see where yours sits.

Here are all 9, with real numbers.

    Why this matters

The 485 window is only 2 to 4 years, and that is the clock you are racing. Miss the cheap points early and you can reach your visa expiry still short of an invite, with nothing left to stack. Run the number now and most 485 holders find they are far closer to 100 than they think, with time to close the gap before the visa runs out.

    Who this is for

    This is for you if:

    • You are on a 485 Graduate visa trying to reach 100 points before it expires.
    • You are stuck at 65 and not sure which points you have left on the table.
    • You are an international student still planning study and want to stack PR points from month one.
    • You are weighing whether a PTE retake, regional study, or a STEM Masters is worth the effort.

    The floor vs the goal

    Points What it means
65 Minimum to submit an EOI
75-80 Possible invite in some occupations
85-100 Realistic invite in most occupations
    100+ Safe band, short wait

65 is the floor. 100 is the goal. Thresholds shift each round and vary by occupation, so treat anything below 85 as "need to keep stacking" and check the latest SkillSelect invitation round before you lodge.

    1. Age (up to 30 points)

    Age Points
    18-24 25
    25-32 30
    33-39 25
    40-44 15
    45+ 0

25-32 is the sweet spot. Wait until 33 and you lose 5 points overnight. Worth knowing before you plan your PTE timeline.

    2. English (up to 20 points)

    Test score Points
    PTE 79+ / IELTS 8+ 20
    PTE 65-78 / IELTS 7+ 10
    PTE 50-64 / IELTS 6+ 0

The fastest 10 points you can add. Four weeks of prep, and often the cheapest lever in the whole table. Going from PTE 65 to PTE 79 is worth the same as two extra years of Australian work experience.

    3. Degree (up to 20 points)

    Qualification Points
    PhD 20
    Bachelor's or Master's 15
    Diploma or trade 10

Bachelor's and Master's sit in the same band. The lift only comes when you stack study bonuses on top.

    4. Australian study (5 points)

You get 5 points if your qualification was at an Australian institution and took at least 2 academic years (16 months minimum). One of the easiest points to bank if you studied here.

    5. Regional study (5 points)

If your qualification was at a regional campus outside Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane, you get another 5 points. Sydney and Melbourne unis give you zero here. I picked a regional campus in Geelong specifically for this.

    6. STEM Masters or PhD (10 points)

    Field Eligible
    AI, Data Science, CS Yes
    Engineering Yes
    Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Bio Yes
    Business, Arts, Law No

A STEM Masters from a regional university stacks to 30 points across sections 3, 4, 5, and 6 combined. This is the single biggest lever for international students still planning their study.

    7. Overseas work (up to 15 points)

    Years in nominated occupation Points
    3-4 5
    5-7 10
    8+ 15

Must be in the last 10 years. Must match the occupation you're nominating. Unskilled early-career work does not count.

    8. Australian work (up to 20 points)

    Years in nominated occupation Points
    1-2 5
    3-4 10
    5-7 15
    8+ 20

Australian work is weighted higher than overseas. One year of AU work lands you the same 5 points that take three years overseas, and it compounds fastest during the 485 window.

    9. Partner or single status (up to 10 points)

    Situation Points
    Single applicant 10
Partner is AU citizen / PR 10
Partner with positive skills assessment + competent English + under 45 10
Partner with competent English only 5
Partner without skills or English 0

Single applicants can claim 10 points under the current rules. Most people never realise this is a lever.

    The hidden add-ons

Three more sources stack on top of the 9 above:

    • NAATI community language: 5 points. A 3-month online course.
    • Professional Year: 5 points. A 44-week program run by engineering, accounting, or IT professional bodies.
    • Sponsorship (190 or 491 variants): 5 or 15 points depending on the subclass. Different application pathway, often faster than pure 189.

    My actual stack

I'm 29, on 485, single, STEM Masters at a regional university, with 3 years of software experience from India.

    Source Points
    Age 29 30
    Masters in AI 15
    2 years Australian study 5
    Regional university 5
    STEM Masters 10
    Overseas work 3 years 5
    Single 10
    Banked today 80
    PTE 79+ (in progress) +20
    1 year AU work (Sept 2026) +5
    Projected end of 485 105

80 points were sitting on the table before I did anything. Most 485 holders I speak to are in the same spot. They just haven't run the number yet.

Stuck below 100 and not sure which points to chase next?

What you can do about it

The gap from 65 to 100 is rarely about fixing your qualifications. It's about spotting which of the 9 sources you've left on the table and closing the cheapest ones first. PTE 79 is the fastest 20 points in the system. Regional study is a decision you make once. Single is a 10-point gift most people don't know they have. Plan it from month one and the 485 window is long enough to close a 20-point gap.

Rules change, occupation ceilings shift each round, and I'm not a MARA-registered migration agent. I'm a 485 holder sharing what the points test looks like from my side of it. For a decision on your own lodgement, talk to a registered migration agent first.
