PTE Score for Australia PR in 2026: Exactly What You Need for 20 Points (189/190/491)

A friend messaged me last month, gutted. He booked his PTE, aimed for 79 in every component because that is the Superior English number everyone still quotes, hit it, and walked away thinking he had locked his 20 points. He had not. For any PTE Academic test taken on or after 7 August 2025, the old uniform 79 is retired, and the new Superior English bar is 69 listening, 70 reading, 85 writing and 88 speaking in one sitting. That writing and speaking jump is exactly where the invite slips away.

This post is the points table, not the vibe. I scored 82 on my first PTE attempt after 7 to 8 diagnostic mocks and one focused week, so I have read these Home Affairs tables more times than I would like. Below is exactly what PTE score you need for Australian PR in 2026, what earns you 20 points versus 10, the component floors for the 189, 190 and 491, and whether you can stitch two attempts together. Every number is linked to Home Affairs or Pearson so you can check it against your own subclass, because they change.

Why this matters

Sixty-five points only gets you in the door. You need a minimum of 65 points just to lodge an expression of interest for the 189, 190 or 491, and in a competitive occupation the actual invite line sits well above that floor. English is the fastest 20 points most applicants can move, because you control it directly. Age, work experience and your skills assessment are largely fixed on the day you apply. Your PTE is not.

The gap between Competent English (0 points) and Superior English (20 points) is often the entire margin between an invitation this round and waiting for the next one. A resit costs you several hundred dollars and, more painfully, weeks you may not have if your 485 graduate visa is ticking down. Getting the target right the first time is the whole game.

How many points is PTE Superior English (20)?

Superior English is worth 20 points on the skilled migration points test, the top English band. To claim it with PTE Academic on a test taken on or after 7 August 2025, you need at least 69 listening, 70 reading, 85 writing and 88 speaking in a single result. Miss any one component and you do not get the 20 points, you drop to the next band you fully clear.

The writing 85 is the one that quietly ends most attempts. That is a high bar, and it is why the writing score is worth breaking down on its own before you book.

What PTE score gives 20 vs 10 points?

Here is the full ladder for PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. Every component is a floor you must clear in the same sitting.

Proficient at 10 points is the safety net most people actually land on. The jump from Proficient to Superior is 10 more points for roughly 10 more marks per component, and it is winnable because PTE is AI-scored and rewards a repeatable structure rather than clever writing.

Is a PTE 79 still enough for Superior English after August 2025?

Not for a new test. The uniform "79 in all four" was the Superior bar for PTE results taken on or before 6 August 2025, and Home Affairs still lists it in Table 2 of the Superior English page for results within the standard 3-year validity window. But any PTE Academic test you sit on or after 7 August 2025 is scored differently and uses the new component floors of 69, 70, 85 and 88. If you booked recently and were targeting 79 across the board, you were aiming at a retired number. Retarget to the four new figures.

What are the component minimums for 189/190/491?

All three visas share the same points-tested English rules. The hard minimum to be eligible for the 189, 190 or 491 is Competent English, which on a current PTE test means at least 47 listening, 48 reading, 51 writing and 54 speaking. That is the entry gate. It gets you a valid application and zero English points. Anything above it, up to Proficient (10) or Superior (20), adds to your total. So the component "minimum" for eligibility and the component target for points are two different numbers, and the 20-point target is the one that decides invites.

Competent vs Proficient vs Superior: which do I actually need?

Competent makes you eligible. Proficient and Superior make you competitive. If your points already clear the invite line for your occupation on Proficient English, do not burn weeks chasing 88 speaking for a margin you do not need. But if you are sitting on 65 to 75 points and staring at a cutoff above that, Superior English is almost always the cheapest 10 to 20 points on the board. It costs one test fee and a focused week, versus years of extra work experience. For most people I talk to on a 485 who are short on points, the honest answer is Superior, and the honest reason is that it is the one lever entirely in your hands.

Write down your exact targetSuperior is L69 R70 W85 S88, Proficient is L58 R59 W69 S76, on any test from 7 August 2025. Put the four numbers on a sticky note so you stop aiming at "79".
Check the points line for your occupationUse the Home Affairs points calculator to confirm your current total, then work out whether Proficient (10) closes your gap or whether you genuinely need Superior (20). Do not over-target.
Book one sitting, not twoAll four components must land in the same PTE result, so plan to clear them together rather than banking on a second attempt to fix one skill. Diagnose your weakest module first, drill only that, then sit the test once.
