Last year 21,595 people moved to Queensland from other states, more than any other state in the country. A lot of them came for the 2032 Olympic boom. Most pictured the wrong job.

This post breaks down what the Brisbane boom actually is, why the "Olympics office job" so many people imagine barely exists, and where the genuine shortage of workers sits in 2026 so you can aim at the roles that are actually open.

    50,000
the construction-worker shortfall Queensland faces by 2026-27 to deliver its 2032 pipeline (CSQ Horizon 2032)

    Why this matters

When a city wins the Olympics, the story in everyone's head is marketing, events, corporate, a lanyard and an office desk near the action. That picture is almost the exact opposite of what the build actually needs.

If you move to Brisbane chasing the version of the boom you imagined, you land in a crowded market fighting for roles that are not short of people. Meanwhile the real shortage, the one with tens of thousands of open seats, wants a completely different qualification. Getting that mismatch wrong can cost you months, and if you are on a time-limited visa, months you cannot spare.

    Who this is for

    This is for you if:

    • You are moving to Brisbane mainly because of the 2032 Olympic build.
    • You picture the boom as marketing, events or corporate office work.
    • You are a graduate weighing Queensland against other states for job odds.
    • You want the real numbers on what Brisbane is short of, not the headline.

What the Brisbane boom actually is

The build is real, and it is enormous. Construction Skills Queensland's Horizon 2032 report projects the state's construction-worker shortfall rising to around 50,000 by 2026-27, with total demand peaking near 156,000 workers as Olympic and infrastructure projects ramp up. That is a genuine, sourced shortage.

But it is a hi-vis shortage, not a lanyard one. The gap is in licensed trades and construction labour, the people who physically build stadiums, transport and venues. It is not a shortage of marketing coordinators, event managers or corporate graduates. Those roles exist, but they are not what the 50,000 figure is measuring.

Now layer on competition. Across Australia, job ads fell 4.5% year on year while applications per ad rose 5.5% to May 2026, per the SEEK Employment Report. So if you chase the imagined office version of the boom, you are not moving into a shortage. You are joining a more crowded queue for roles that were never the gap.

    Where the real openings sit

πŸ› οΈ Licensed trades and construction: the actual engine of the 2032 build, and the source of the 50,000-worker shortfall. If you are trade-qualified, this is a genuine open door.

πŸ“‹ Health, education and construction broadly: Jobs and Skills Australia's 2025 Occupation Shortage List puts these at the front of the national shortages, with 29% of occupations short overall.

❌ The imagined "Olympics office job": not trade-qualified means you did not move to the boom. You moved into the queue.

To be clear, this is not "Brisbane office jobs are dead." Queensland graduate postings are actually up strongly versus pre-pandemic levels. The trap is the mismatch: expecting the boom to hand you a corporate role when the boom is built in steel-cap boots.

What you can do about it

I live and work in the Brisbane–Gold Coast area as a Voice AI Engineer, and I job-hunted my way into that role as an international graduate, so I know how much aiming beats hoping. Here is how I would approach Brisbane.

Step 1: Separate the boom you pictured from the boom that exists

Write down the job you are actually moving for. If it is marketing, events or generic corporate, understand that is not the shortage, and price in real competition. If you have a trade or construction skill, you are looking straight at the open door.

Step 2: Match your resume to a real shortage, not a headline

Target the sectors that are genuinely short of workers and rewrite your resume in their language, with the right keywords, titles and outcomes for the Australian market. A resume built for the job you imagined gets filtered out for the job that exists.

Step 3: Go deep on fewer, sharper applications

In a market where applicants per role are climbing, twenty tailored applications into roles that are actually short will beat 100 copy-paste ones into roles that are not. Research the employer, adjust per role, write a real cover note.
